This week, we continue with work about possums, based on the Australian Museum display. There is a research competition about possums, due in at the end of week 3, with prizes for each stage. Lunchtime activities this week will also have a possum theme. As part of our work last week, we read Possum Magic, and looked for the cities on Google maps, then used Streetview to see what the view fron Sydney Harbour Bridge looked like! Also this week, there will be a raffle for Library borrowers, as Monday is International School Libraries Day.
In Library lessons this term, students are using technology and the Internet, to learn more about different authors, as well as developing information skills. Kinder students will be reading stories about “Clifford, the Big Red Dog”, and we will be visiting the Clifford website to do more activities based on the books.
In Year 1 & 2, students will be looking at 2 books by Lisa Shanahan and Emma Quay- “Bear and Chook”, and “Bear and Chook at Sea”.They will be participating in the “Bear and Chook Book Rap”, an online discussion activity that will involve the students reading the 2 picture books, and writing replies to be shared with students all over Australia. One of the activities is to plot where all these different schools are, on a map of Australia. The replies to the discussion topics will be on the Bear and Chook Blog, at http://rapblog6.edublogs.org. The site is moderated by NSW DET, to ensure quality and safety. the author and illustrator will also be available on the blog, to answer student questions.
For Literature in years 3 & 4, students are going to be looking at stories by Roald Dahl. Again, technology will be integrated into our activities, and we will be looking at the Dahl website and working on activities on the site. In Years 5 & 6, we are looking at stories by Andy Griffiths. Again, we will be using his website to learn more about his work- including watching a You Tube video where he talks about his writing, watching him read part of one of his stories then supplying an ending, and reading his blog for information.
