Library News

The Library Stocktake starts at the end of this week. Please make sure that you help your child to find their books, and return them to school. Individual reminders have been given out, and lists sent to classrooms. Next week, letters will be sent home about the cost of replacement books. When students are allowed to borrow up to 3 books in Stage 3, and hardcover books cost about $30, this can add up to a substantial amount of money- which is why students are asked to have a safe place to keep Library books.

Library lessons for the next few weeks will take place in the classrooms, with a casual teacher taking my lessons while I do the stocktake.

Thank you to the parents who have already helped by returning books.

This week we have Kinder Orientation at school. We will have the new Kinder students visiting the Library, and on Wednesday I will be talking to their parents. We look forward to seeing them, and showing them some of the exciting things we do in Library.

The Library Stocktake starts at the end of this month. Overdue lists have been given to class teachers, and individual notes have been given to students. If your child has an overdue book, please help them to find it and return it to the Library. The next step is to send letters asking for money for replacement books- as some books cost up to $30, and when some students have 2 or 3 books, this can amount to quite a large sum of money.

Having just experienced 340ml of rainfall in 4 hrs at Coffs Harbour on Friday night, I am now hoping for sunshine this week! However, if it does rain, students are able to watch movies in the Library before school and at recess and lunchtime. On Friday we all enjoyed watching “Round the Twist” as it was too wet to be in the playground.

I reminded everyone last week that the Library is open before school for reading, games, borrowing etc, and on Wednesdays and Thursdays I am available to help students with homework, research or reading. Please remind your children of this- we also enjoy apples while we are reading!

This week in Craft, we are making poppies for Remembrance Day. On Tuesday we have Infants Storytime, when we will be reading 2 new books, on Thursday we will finish watching “Round the Twist” and on Friday we are using games and jigsaws.

We have the display about possums until Friday, when it has to be returned to the Australian Museum. The research competition also finishes on Friday- as yet, there are very few entries. Please encourage your child to enter, as there will be some good prizes. Last week we held a lucky draw for borrowers, as Monday was International School Libraries Day. Anyone who borrowed during the week got a ticket in the draw. The 2 prizes will be presented at Assembly on Friday.

Reminder- The Library is open before school as well as at lunchtime. On Wednesday and Thursday I am available to help students with homework and research, or just to listen to them read. I also have some apples for them to eat at this time. All students are welcome even if they just want to sit and read to themselves and have an apple. Please make sure that your child knows that help with homework and reading is available.

Also this week, there will be a raffle for Library borrowers, as Monday is International School Libraries Day.

In Library lessons this term, students are using technology and the Internet, to learn more about different authors, as well as developing information skills. Kinder students will be reading stories about “Clifford, the Big Red Dog”, and we will be visiting the Clifford website to do more activities based on the books.

In Year 1 & 2, students will be looking at 2 books by Lisa Shanahan and Emma Quay- “Bear and Chook”, and “Bear and Chook at Sea”.They will be participating in the “Bear and Chook Book Rap”, an online discussion activity that will involve the students reading the 2 picture books, and writing replies to be shared with students all over Australia. One of the activities is to plot where all these different schools are, on a map of Australia. The replies to the discussion topics will be on the Bear and Chook Blog, at http://rapblog6.edublogs.org. The site is moderated by NSW DET, to ensure quality and safety. the author and illustrator will also be available on the blog, to answer student questions.

For Literature in  years 3 & 4, students are going to be looking at stories by Roald Dahl. Again, technology will be integrated into our activities, and we will be looking at the Dahl website and working on activities on the site. In Years 5 & 6, we are looking at stories by Andy Griffiths. Again, we will be using his website to learn more about his work- including watching a You Tube video where he talks about his writing, watching him read part of one of his stories then supplying an ending, and reading his blog for information.
